About the Charity
Clinton County IL Humane Society
The Clinton County IL Humane Society is the product of the life long dream of Deb Wesslemann. A passion for pets drew her to start working with the Clinton County Animal Control Shelter. After beginning the "Pet of the Week" column in the local Breese Journal, Deb still wanted to do more. She began the process of starting a local Humane Society. She connected with people from around the county that supported her cause and the Clinton County IL Humane Society, CCHS, was born.
"CCHS is committed to preventing cruelty and improving the lives of our animal citizens. Our mission is to foster an atmosphere of communication and collaboration between local animal control and other rescue organizations to help find appropriate loving homes for unwanted domestic animals and to educate the citizens of our communities on the importance of proper animal care, spay/neuter programs and responsible ownership of an animal friend." --Clinton County Humane Society Mission Statement
CCHS takes in dogs and cats giving them medical care, such as spaying/neutering them, treating heart worm and other medical issues. The primary expense of CCHS is veterinary care. The Pooch Playoffs competition is raising money for those needs.
Other ways to get involved with CCHS - Fostering! Currently there are only 4 foster homes. CCHS takes care of the dog supplies and your family takes care of the pooch! These families are helpful in identifying the personality of the dog to help find the best possible home for them.
You can also volunteer to be a dog walker. Have a new fitness goal and need some extra motivation? Look no further than your local Humane Society!
Blankets, dog and cat food, collars, leashes are all things you can donate. They are quickly approaching kitten season and are in dire need of both dry and wet kitten food.
Part of the mission of CCHS is to educate the public about properly caring for our furry friends. The number one message they spread is to spay/neuter your pets. Common misconceptions about spaying/neutering is that they pet needs to come into heat first. That isn't necessary. The benefits of spaying/neutering your pet are reduces spraying and marking, reduces roaming, reduces aggression, lowers the risk of cancer, decreases over population and increases lifespan up to 3-5 years. In three years, and as early as 4 months old, 1 unspayed female and 1 unneutered male can produce: 512 DOGS and 382 CATS.
Twice a month CCHS hosts meet and greets where you can come meet the pets available for adoption. The next meet and greet is Sunday, March 10 from 12PM to 2PM. Snowy Treats will be there along with the Easter Bunny and a petting zoo! All donations they received to enter the petting zoo will be given to CCHS. Come and see them!
Thank you to Heather Hanna, K-9 coordinator, and Kathy Schaeffer building manager for letting me stop by and hang out with the pets. I definitely have a favorite, now to see if I can convince Jeff that three dogs is not too many. ;)
PETS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION (as of 3/8/24)
